HAPPY NEW YEAR OF THE TIGER!

The Museum of Neon Art enters the new decade with our first Transformer in an online format. In addition to obvious cost saving measures we can offer more print and photos with each publication, not to mention reaching a broader audience and doing our part towards sustaining our environment.

We would like to thank the members, Board of Trustees, volunteers and staff for your continued support of MONA. While we continue our negotiations with the City of Glendale for a move to a permanent facility on Brand Blvd., we would like to take a moment with this issue to reminisce over the past decade. For those of you not familiar with our history, we were twelve years on Traction Avenue, four years at Universal CityWalk and ten years at Grand Hope Park….we were homeless for 2007 and then reopened in our current temporary location in 2008. It’s already been two years at the 4th Street location! If you haven’t visited MONA on 4th, we hope you do so this year! There are some great restaurants in the area and always a lot of street activity to make your descent into the maze of one-way streets and paid parking of Downtown a worthwhile adventure.

–From Kim Koga , the director of MONA.

The Downtown Art Walk is growing by leaps and bounds on the 2nd Thursday of every month. So if you like crowds of young art party enthusiasts visit MONA’s ELECTRIC HOUR from 8-9PM for neon-bending demos by neon artist Michael Flechtner, live music by our favorite DJ Neon Hunter, and good conversation.  We recently set up a new black box/UV light room for video screenings.  For our black box opening we called upon VJ Fader (aka James Cui), one of LA’s leading forces in video light manipulation, to show his electric light video called  Jelly Fish made by real-time video processing program.

James will also teach a video workshop on electric light and video computer processing on Sunday May 9th from 4-9pm at MONA in association with Los Angeles Video Artists. Seats are limited to 20 however MONA members receive a special discount. To sign up for the workshop, read more here.

Now in in its twelfth season, the MONA Neon Cruise has already begun to receive wide-spread attention with a feature on KCAL Channel 9’s Best of LA TV Show. Many past riders say that this tour is the “quintessential LA experience, ” where participants leave with plenty of anecdotal tidbits on Los Angeles’ illuminated past. (After all, LA is the home of the first commercial neon sign in America)!  Guided by urban anthropologist and neon sign expert, Eric Lynxwiler,  riders get to explore LA’s shining displays of vintage and contemporary neon.  Along the way Lynxwiler  points out the historical neon signs behind the classic movie marquees of the historic Broadway theater district, the glowing pagodas of Chinatown, and the glittering lights of Hollywood Blvd.  Riders also are treated with several illuminated surprises in-between including a special stop at Canter’s Deli!

Every Saturday night from June to Novemember, the tour starts at MONA, beginning at 7:30pm with a private reception of the museum’s collection.  At 8pm the British open-top double decker bus arrives at the museum and takes off for a three-hour tour of night lights, fun, and adventure. However, seats are limited so make sure to reserve via paypal at neonmona.org or call 213-489-9918.

New Exhibition Opening

May 23-November 20, 2010

Show Opening: June 26th, 8pm

Talk/Demonstration by Bill Concannon: July 16th, 7:30pm

“Recycled, Reclaimed, Reinvented: The Art of Bill Concannon”  a solo retrospective on longtime MONA member and neon artist will run from May to November. Th e opening reception will be held at the museum on June 26 from 8-10:30pm.  Concannon is an excellent speaker on neon art, and will give a special talk and demonstration at MONA on Saturday July 16th from 7:30-9:30pm. (Image to the right: “Bill’s Bottle Shop,” neon art installation by Bill Concannon)

About the Artist Bill has been involved with the neon medium since the 1970s.  His 30-year experience in neon has included owning and running his neon shop, Aargon-Neon, for commercial sign production, for the movie industry, teaching the craft of neon-bending in an art context and creating his own neon art sculpture.  For his artwork, Concannon de-emphasizes his skill as a bender, using as he describes “that anonymous tradition” of commercial signage and roadside art to create a format for his ideas about history, politics, and sustainability.

“F.O.B. (Friends of Bill),” a group exhibit curated by Concannon will features artists whose works in neon have been inspirational to him including artists: Larry Albright, Bill Alsup, Arlo Fishman, David O. Johnson, Shawna Peterson, Bruce Suba, Ed Tannenbaum, Stuart Ziff and Elyse Weidner.

(Image below: Black Light Installation by Jerico Woggon)

“California Surf, ” a site-specific art installation by black light artist Jerico Woggon will also be on display in our vestibule space. Born and raised at the beach in Summerland, California, surfing was a childhood activity that became Jerico’s passion into adulthood.  Currently living in Downtown LA, Jerico still derives inspiration from images related to nature, the beach, and surfing which is a major influence in his black light art.  The surfing theme will continue inside in the lobby gallery with neon works by Larry Manson, Richard Ankrom and Randy Noborikawa.

Spread the MONA love on Facebook!

In just 2 months since we started our MONA facebook fan page we have seen our fan base jump to more than 500 strong. Help us continue to spread the word about MONA and reach that 1,000 fan mark by suggesting to all your friends to “Like” of MONA.  With our fan page up and running we have created  a variety of interactive projects for neon enthusiasts to participate with MONA such as our monthly online photo/video contest juried by well-known photographers and video artists in Los Angeles.  Each month three winners are selected from a chosen neon related-theme and exhibited in our artshop for Art Walk.

In March for our first competition we picked a broad theme on Night Photography and connected with Gary Leonard of Take My Picture Gallery in Downtown LA to select three winners. Gary picked Li Li from Culver City, Eric Longdren from San Francisco, and Lauren Cols0n from Nashville.  MONA was thrilled to see the excitement our fans had on neon light and signs through their photo posts as well as connecting with fans worldwide.  In April we narrowed the theme by focusing on Light & Speed with the help of Mel Melcon of the Los Angeles Time who selected Li Li (consecutive winner), and Josue Zeta from Mexico City/Los Angeles, and Zachary Istrin from Santa Monica.   Josue and Zach never knew about the museum until they found us on facebook, and after winning the contest they came out to Art Walk to visit the museum for the first time!  Mel Melcon also gave an excellent presentation to our third Thursday Meet Up photo night where he presented a special talk and critic on photojournalism for online newspapers by working with still images and sound collection.  Watch Mel’s story beat in LA Times called Pop.u.LA.tion: Stories from the Sidewalk.

Video Vignette Competition Deadline: May 5th, 9PM on facebook

In May we will try a facebook video contest on Light & Motion, juried by Hans Fjellestad, curator of RESBOX and director of the MOOG documentary.  The videos will then be exhibited in our new black box room.  There are two more weeks left to submit your short video vignette on light to our facebook video fan album. Read more about our video contest here.

Introducing our new Marketing Person

Sara Segerlin joined the MONA staff as our first marketing person.

Sara comes from Rochester, New York where she completed her Master of Fine Arts in Media Studies  at the Visual Studies Workshop, and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications/Journalism from Lock Haven University of PA. Her concentration emphasizes on photography, video art and multimedia archival collection. In the last two years,  she spent much of her time traveling across the country with the Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker as their lead photographer and marketing person.  She quickly learned the strengths of doing digital work on the fly while working and living with 40 Russian dancers  and covering about 62 small-cities in a time-span of 7-weeks.  After the ballet, she joined a Toronto-based video company representing their media brand for national dance competitions similar to show’s like “So You Think You Can Dance.”  In this position, she was the spokesperson for the company’s marketing campaign on dance videos, and led the supervision of the video/photo crew during stage performances.  In 2007, she spent six months living in Auckland, New Zealand  where she completed an apprenticeship with the Media & Interdisciplinary Art Center of New Zealand as interim Video Coordinator on cross-disciplinary art events that collided and connected emerging artists to the public in forms of multimedia, live performance,  and kinetic art installations.  In NZ she got to see one of her favorite kinetic artists Len Lye.

Sara is thrilled to be learning about Neon Art in Los Angeles and she hopes to continue the museum’s mission in connecting the public to art in electric illuminated form!

Ingenious Possibilities

For those with an interest in all things GLASS, the GAS (Glass Art Society) is holding their annual conference this June 10-11, 2010 in Louisville, Kentucky. There will be a juried neon exhibit as well as other activities, demonstrations and lectures. Go to  glassart.org

Regional Festivals

Long Beach has Let There Be Light, curated by Liza Simone of Phantom Galleries. This is the group that installs fine art in vacant storefronts. This annual light event is an expanded holiday light show occurring during the end of the year, November – December.

The Santa Monica Glow Festival is held in September on the Santa Monica beach. Nothing like an ocean backdrop for the 20,000 plus crowd of predominately 20-something year olds!

Lilli Muller’s Autumn Lights event is also held September 25th at Pershing Square in Downtown LA. Curated by Muller, the event is co-sponsored by the City of Los Angeles and most of the participating artists are Downtowners.
